Beginners Guide in Painting Walls – Roll, Roll, Roll Your Way to the Best Result

In our previous blog, we dived into how to prepare and plan for painting your home (if you haven’t already, check that one out!). In this article, we will breakdown the painting process into easy, beginner level steps.

Step 1: gather your supplies. Things that you will need include:

  • Paint roller

  • Paint roller extension pole

  • Drop cloths

  • Paintbrushes

  • Paint tray

  • Sandpaper

  • Painter’s tape

  • Rags

  • Putty knife

  • Mixing stick

How much paint will you need? It really depends on how much you’re painting but a good rule of thumb 1 gallon/400 square feet. However, factors that affect how much paint you are going to use include:

  • Color of your paint and color of your current wall. It will take more layers of paint to go from dark to light

  • Texture of your wall – textured wall requires more paint that smooth walls

  • Windows and doors

Step 2: Prep your walls and space. You can consider using a gray-tinted primer if you are using saturated colors in order to decrease the number of layers required to get the right color. Additionally, it’s important to protect the rest of our space from paint. Make sure to cover furniture and the floor in case any spatters come flying. Use the paint tape to cover any outlets and to clearly demarcate areas where you do not want paint to go.

Step 3: Prepare to paint. Using a paint brush, go over the more precise areas of the walls such as the corners and edges as the roller is too cumbersome to be accurate in these areas. Once those are painted, grab the paint roller, and fill in the middle. “W” motions are great for covering surface area as well as avoiding roller lines. Repeat this process twice and maybe three times if your paint is not opaque enough. While you are painting make sure you are constantly stirring the paint with a stick to ensure all of the ingredients and layers are thoroughly mixed together. Once you are done, all that’s left is clean up by removing the paint tape and covers.
