Home Problems to Address BEFORE the Renovations

When flipping a home or doing your own renovations, the most exciting part is looking up the designs you want to do and start getting elbows deep into the physical work. BUT before the renovations start, there are some key aspects that need to be addressed for the home’s infrastructural health and to ensure whoever is living in the home will be safe from hazards. In this blog, we’ll talk about some common hazards to check for and take into account for your renovation plans:

1. Creatures

Whether it be mice, rats, termites, or ants, pests are not only annoying but can be detrimental to your health. They can carry diseases as well as leave droppings around the house. This is especially important if there are people susceptible to illness living in the home. Signs of pests also means there is a pathway from the outside to your home that you might need to address. If you don’t see the pests themselves, you can look for droppings, chewing marks, signs of nesting, and obvious gaps in the walls. Make sure to check the exhaust vents, condensate lines, pipes, ducts, utility access panels, and the garage. You can even hire an inspector if you want to be sure. Exterminators are widely available, but we highly encourage you to hire humane exterminators for rodents.

2. Mold Sometimes mold is unavoidable in wet places like the kitchen or bathroom, especially if the home is older. However, it’s important to get this checked out especially if you find mold in strange places such as the dining room or office. Make sure to utilize an inspector certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or the American Council for Accredited Certification. They can advise you on how to remove the mold and whether it must be done professionally. 3. Uneven flooring

Don’t leave these unchecked! Uneven, sagging, or bent floorboards might indicate water damage which can lead to rot of the subfloor. Make sure to check as repair might be warranted. Like for the previous two, you can have an inspector check the damage and give you recommendations.
